The ASPS Releases 2017 Plastic Surgery Statistics

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their 2017 statistics on cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. As you may have expected, breast augmentation surgery and rhinoplasty (nose job) were two of the most popular procedures performed. Yet there’s more to the numbers than that. These figures help surgeons understand trends in aesthetic treatments and what the future may hold for aesthetic rejuvenation.

The team at our San Mateo, CA plastic surgery center would like to consider these 2017 statistics, offering insight into these numbers and what they may mean for you as well as the field of cosmetic surgery.

The Total Number of Cosmetic Procedures in 2017

There were a total of 17.5 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2017. This included 1.8 million surgical procedures and 15.7 million non-surgical procedures. In addition to these cosmetic numbers, there were 5.8 million reconstructive procedures performed.

2017 Trends in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation was the most popular plastic surgery performed in 2017. There were 300,378 total breast augmentations last year, up 3 percent over 2016 numbers.

The tally is even more impressive when compared to statistics compiled in the year 2000. In 2000, there were 212,500 breast augmentations performed in the United States. That means a 41 percent increase in breast enlargements since the beginning of the 21st century.

There was also a notable increase in breast lift surgeries. There were 105,219 breast lifts performed in 2017, a 4 percent increase from 2016, and a staggering 99 percent increase since the year 2000.

2017 Trends in Rhinoplasty and Nose Reshaping

Rhinoplasty was the third most popular plastic surgery performed in 2017. There were 218,924 nose reshaping procedures performed last year, which was actually down 2 percent from 2016 figures.

The slight downturn is part of a surprising downward trend in rhinoplasty numbers since the year 2000. In 2000, there were 389,155 nose reshaping procedures performed, which means there’s been a 44 percent dip in rhinoplasty procedures since the new millennium.

What These Numbers Suggest for Cosmetic Surgery in 2018

Generally, these cosmetic surgery statistics suggest a continued increase in popularity for non-surgical treatments. These procedures yield excellent results, involve little to no downtime, and have fewer risks and complications associated with them than surgical procedures.

The surgical numbers note a trend toward body contouring surgeries, which helps people with loose and sagging skin after major weight loss as well as the natural signs of advanced age.
