ASPS Releases 2018 Plastic Surgery Statistics

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has released its annual statistics on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. For the 13th year in a row, breast augmentation surgery with silicone or saline implants remains the most popular surgical option. Rhinoplasty (nose job) also had a strong showing, remaining extremely popular with patients.

Dr. John R. Griffin and the team at our San Mateo, CA would like to go over these numbers in a bit more detail below. We’ll also consider what these trends suggest about 2019.

Total Cosmetic Procedures Performed in 2018

In 2018, there were 17,721,671 surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2018. This was a 2% increase from 2017.

Breaking the total number down, there were 1,811,740 cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in 2018, a 1% increase from 2017. By contrast, there were 15,909,931 non-surgical treatments were performed in 2018, a 2% increase from 2017.

Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

These were the five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures of 2018:

  • Breast Augmentation - 313,735
  • Liposuction - 258,558
  • Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty) - 213,780
  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) - 206,529
  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) - 130,081

Facelift was the sixth most popular cosmetic surgery, with 121,531 procedures in 2018.

Most Popular Non-surgical Cosmetic Procedures

These were the five most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures of 2018:

  • Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) - 7,437,378
  • Soft Tissue Fillers - 2,676,970
  • Chemical Peel - 1,384,327
  • Laser Hair Removal - 1,077,490
  • Microdermabrasion - 709,413

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy was the sixth most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in 2018, with 675,552 procedures performed.

Most Popular Reconstructive Procedures

These were the five most commonly performed reconstructive surgery procedures of 2018:

  • Tumor Removal (Including Skin Cancer) - 4,462,519
  • Laceration Repair (Other Than Facial Lacerations) - 253,447
  • Maxillofacial Surgery - 204,521
  • Scar Revision - 182,250
  • Breast Reconstruction - 101,657

Breast Augmentation Trends Over the Years

Breast augmentation surgery remains the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed, with a 4% increase from 2017.

Breast augmentation has consistently been the number one surgical procedure since 2006. In 2005, the first year of ASPS statistics available, breast augmentation ranked behind liposuction and rhinoplasty, respectively.

Here are breast augmentation numbers from recent years for some perspective:

  • 2017 - 300,378
  • 2016 - 290,467
  • 2015 - 279,143
  • 2014 - 286,254
  • 2013 - 290,224

Rhinoplasty Trends Over the Years

Like breast augmentation, rhinoplasty remains an extremely popular surgical option, consistently ranked in the top three since the ASPS started gathering annual statistics.

While rhinoplasty may not usurp breast augmentation as the top surgical procedure, it fluctuates between being the second or third most performed cosmetic surgery in America.

There was a slight dip of 2% comparing the number of nose reshaping procedures performed in 2018 to the numbers from 2017.

Here are rhinoplasty numbers from recent years for some perspective:

  • 2017 - 218,924
  • 2016 - 223,018
  • 2015 - 217,979
  • 2014 - 217,124
  • 2013 - 221,053

What These Overall Trends May Say About 2019

These cosmetic treatment trends suggest that non-surgical cosmetic treatments will continue to gain popularity, especially the use of cosmetic injectables. Great results with no scarring and little downtime continues to appeal to more and more patients.

We also assume that the top five surgical procedures will hold steady. Since more people are turning to non-surgical facial rejuvenation, facelift may experience another slight and gradual dip in popularity.
