Rhinoplasty (nose job) is one of the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures performed each year. The results of surgery can be dramatic or subtle.
Dr. John R. Griffin has helped many patients in and around San Mateo, CA thanks to carefully tailored nose reshaping surgery.
To give you an idea of the popularity of rhinoplasty, we would like to go over some basic numbers on the procedure. All of the figures shared below come from the most recent findings by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
2017 Rhinoplasty Overview
The ASPS recorded a total of 218,924 rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017. This is down 2 percent from 2016’s rhinoplasty surgery total (223,018) and a 44 percent decrease from the number of rhinoplasty procedures performed in the year 2000 (389,155).
Rhinoplasty is the third most popular plastic surgery procedure in the United States, behind breast augmentation surgery (300,378) and liposuction (246,354). This continues the trend in surgery popularity in 2016.
Rhinoplasty and Gender
Of the 1,662,550 cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2017, 87 percent were performed on women and 13 percent on men.
Focusing specifically on rhinoplasty in 2017, there were 166,531 nose reshaping procedures performed on women and 52,393 performed on men. While male patients comprised just 24 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures in 2017, rhinoplasty was still the most popular plastic surgery among men.
Rhinoplasty and Age
In terms of age, rhinoplasty broke down as follows in each age group:
- Age 13-19 - 30,681 (14 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- Age 20-29 - 68,624 (31 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- Age 30-39 - 52,208 (24 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- Age 40-54 - 45,765 (21 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- Age 55 and over - 21,646 (10 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
In the 13 to 19 age group, rhinoplasty was the most popular plastic surgery procedure by far. Of the 65,889 total cosmetic surgery procedures performed on patients age 13 to 19, 46.6 percent were rhinoplasty/nose reshaping surgery.
Rhinoplasty and Geographic Region
In terms of the region of the country, rhinoplasty numbers break down as follows:
- New England - 63,538 (29 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- Midwest - 30,188 (14 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- Southeast - 27,017 (12 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- The South - 39,171 (18 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
- The West, Alaska, and Hawaii - 59,010 (27 percent of all rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2017)
Amount Spent on Rhinoplasty in 2017
The ASPS statistics for 2017 revealed that $1,121,985,500 was spent on rhinoplasty. Even though rhinoplasty was the third most popular surgery for the year, patients spent more money on rhinoplasty than any other surgical procedure.
Part of this may be due to the average surgeon/physician fee for rhinoplasty. In the United States, surgeons charge an average of $5,125 for rhinoplasty. This cost takes into account the many variables involved in nasal surgery. Keep in mind that your nose reshaping procedure may cost more or less depending on the complexity of your case and the nature of your situation.
